Common Interview
Questions
It
is safe to say that during any employment interview you will be asked
questions relating to yourself, your employment history and your
experience and \ or knowledge.
Most interviewers start
with a basic list of questions which will be used to gain information
about you, this will then normally lead onto more applicable questions
being asked.
You can help yourself by
preparing your answers for questions that you believe may be asked,
make a list of these questions and practice your answers. Even if you
are only asked one or two of these questions it will have been a
worthwhile exercise, I have compiled a list of common interview
questions (and good quality answers) below;
Q: Tell
me about yourself?
A: Here is an opportunity
to sell yourself, be positive about your character, personality and
achievements but do not be perceived as arrogant or big headed.
Q: Give
me a brief overview of your employment to date?
A: Start with your very
first employment but if you have held many positions start with the
first relevant one, be brief about each position but highlight areas
where you excelled or had supervisory, management or responsibility
experience.
Never criticise or fault a
previous employer but be constructive and if you are questioned as you
why to left the position use it to your advantage and state career
progression or wanting a more challenging role.
Q: Why
do you want to leave your current employer?
A: As stated above NEVER
critisise your current or previous employer, it is totally
unprofessional. Instead you should give reasons why you are looking for
a new position with a new employer;
1. You want to further your career and believe you would achieve this
by joining XYZ company.
2. You want a more challenging role, again stating that you believe you
would get this with XYZ company.
3. You are keen to climb the ‘promotion ladder’ and you think you have
a better chance of achieving this with XYZ company.
Q: How do handle stressful situations?
A: This can be a difficult
question to answer but it is quite common to be asked so you need to be
prepared for it! A good answer to this would be to say that you handle
and deal with pressure situations before they turn into stressful ones!
You can go on to say that you prioritise your workload so that you know
what needs to be done and when which again avoids stress.
Finally you can say that
you work better when under a bit of pressure but if it ever does get
slightly stressful you go to the gym after work to reduce it!
Here
are some more questions (or variations of) that you may be asked furing
an interview, do your own research and define your answers...
1. How do you deal with
criticism and stress?
2. What is your definition
of success?
3. Why do you think that
you would fit in with this company? (This is where your research comes
in handy)
4. Have you ever been
fired, and why?
5. Where do you see
yourself in 5 years?
6. Do you prefer to work
on your own or as a team?
7. Why are you interested
in working for this company?
8.How do you handle a
difference of opinion with your colleagues or superiors?
9.Why should I hire you?
